Responsible ship recycling starts with an Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) to track toxic substances onboard. Waste management and disposal ensure proper handling of hazardous materials, while pollution control measures prevent oil spills, toxic runoff, and air pollution. Green dismantling techniques, such as non-toxic cutting and controlled deconstruction, help minimize environmental impact.
Ensuring worker safety is a top priority. Protective equipment and training are provided to reduce risks, while structured dismantling procedures follow strict safety guidelines. Emergency response plans, including fire safety and medical aid, are in place to handle unexpected incidents. Additionally, toxic material handling procedures ensure the safe removal of harmful substances like asbestos and lead.
Strict regulations guide the ship recycling process. Each ship must have a Ship Recycling Plan (SRP) outlining safe dismantling methods. Only HKC-certified Ship Recycling Facilities (SRFs) can conduct recycling, ensuring compliance with industry standards. Regular audits and certifications guarantee adherence to international regulations, including IMO and the Basel Convention.
Maximizing material recovery is essential for sustainability. Recycling of steel, electronics, and ship components reduces waste, while proper decontamination before scrapping removes hazardous substances. Sustainable waste disposal ensures non-recyclable materials are handled responsibly, with tracking and transparency maintaining accountability in material reuse.
A transparent and ethical recycling process requires independent oversight and reporting to document activities. Flag state and port state inspections verify compliance before scrapping, while legal enforcement imposes penalties for violations. Implementing Ship Recycling Management Systems (SRMS) ensures standardized safety and sustainability protocols across the industry.
